How much HS2 traffic will use the A355 in Beaconsfield?

Alison Wheelhouse

The following information is taken from The Bucks County Council South & Herts County Council Local Traffic Management Plan (revision numbers appear below).

HS2 information reveals that vehicles will use the A355 to and from works being carried out on:

· Amersham vent

· Little Missenden vent

· CT (Chiltern Tunnel?) north portal

· Chesham vent

· Small Dean compound

· Wendover Green Tunnel North Portal

· Stoke Mandeville Bypass

· Ellesborough Road

The duration of "busy periods" are shown in these tables and they vary in duration.

Here's the route along the A355:

Now, all these figures are as clear as mud, right? I posed the question to Bucks Council: how much HS2 traffic will there be on the A355? The answer given this month was “we are still waiting for the full set of Section 17 Applications to assess the total HGV and traffic movements related to HS2 through the area.” In other words, Bucks Council don’t know how much HS2 traffic will be using the A355. They have disclosed this (below), but who knows what the “busy period” and “peak month of activity” will be, although the “busy period” lasts for many months, according to the tables above. But the table below does show that during such "busy period", there will be between 1,202 and 1402 lorries making 2-way trips. IF this is a monthly figure (not clear), this would appear to amount to c. 46 lorries per day making 2 way trips, or 92 trips per day (or about 4 per hour) on the A355 during “busy period” and “peak month”. Outside of that time, who knows how many there will be? Not Bucks Council it seems.
